Kudos to a Walmart Greeter – He Brightened My Shopping Experience


JamarIt isn’t every day that I make a post about an employee of a store. Actually I never have before…but this man made me want to. I was standing in line waiting my turn to check out of the Easton Walmart in Ohio and I have to say I completely enjoyed watching this “greeter” say hi to people and check receipts as others left.  What did I notice?  His smile, his genuine smile.  It wasn’t a fake “I’m the greeter and I have to have a smile plastered on my face” smile…he was truly enjoying what he was doing.  A greeter in Walmart….not a high powered businessman making millions, not a movie star signing autographs, but a Walmart greeter.  I was impressed.  He wasn’t putting on a show for anyone, he didn’t know I was watching or anyone was watching. He was just being friendly.
I told the cashier that I was enjoying watching him. She told me that they put the right person there.  I told him as I left that I enjoyed watching him.  He smiled and told me that was nice of me.  I walked out of the store.  Went to my car and felt like I wanted to do more.  I called customer service….and waited…and waited and almost hung up, but I didn’t want to, I wanted to tell someone about him. When she answered,  I asked his name and asked what I could do to let someone know he was doing a great job.  She said I could contact the store manager and tell him or send in a letter.

I left, went to another store and shopped but felt compelled to go back. I wanted to take his picture and do a blog post…ok, how strange will that be I thought?  Hi…I am going to take your picture.  I have to say that I was out of my comfort zone. I pulled in the parking lot and told myself as I went down the full row of cars that if I got a close space I would get out and go get his picture. Sure enough the 2nd car from the end pulled out just then.  I pulled in and then I saw him walking in the parking lot.  Perfect I thought.

I went over to him and told him I was so impressed with his attitude that I wanted to do a blog post on him. I asked if I could get his picture and he agreed.  He told me I was sweet.

His name is Jamar.   If you see this Jamar…be sure to tell him hi and smile at him.  If you see any “Jamar” as you go about your day…be sure to tell them their smile made your day.

How often do you feel like your day was improved because someone smiled?  Someone was friendly…..someone who was  a Walmart greeter….made my day brighter.  I’m impressed.  I hope this man goes far in life….he deserves to.

Reorganizing my Office

This is the “before” picture of my office. We have a very small office and have desk for my husband and I, file cabinets and a bookshelf. But I still needed some more space.
Think “up” is always what I tell my clients. Shelves right? But I wanted to do it on my own without having to have my husband help me and I love cubbies. I would have loved to have gone to Ikea and gotten one of their cubby units, but they are over an hour and half away. So I went to Target and got 2 of their 8 cubby units. They were on sale for $39.99 each and they worked great.
I turned my 4 drawer (2 side by side) file drawer perpendicular to the wall and moved the desk against the wall. I now have the wall to use for a large calendar and message board.
I also had a 3 drawer unit on the left of my desk. Since I moved the desk over to the wall, I put that on the right of my desk and brought the printer down so it is actually more accessible than it was up on the 5 drawer file cabinet. I know in these pictures it is hard to see the detail of what I did with the other furniture, but it did make it better and more accessible to wear I sit.

Furniture Moving Pads

I was reorganizing my own office and was frustrated that I could not move this big massive and very heavy desk myself. I literally could not even budge it. I was about to twitter how frustrated I was when I remembered I had purchased these furniture moving pads last year and had never used them. I ran down to my basement and got them out of my organizing drawer of goodies!
These were the big size (I think I could have used the small ones). I brought them up and the only hard part was getting them under the legs. I actually got under the desk and used my back to lift the desk just enough to slip them under.
I only used 2 on the 2 legs closest to the wall. I got on the other side of the desk and it slid easily!! I was more than excited. I thought I was at a stand still until my hubby got home. But I got it moved and was able to finish the office myself and surprise him.  I actually don’t even remember where I bought them, but you can find basically the same thing at The Container Store.
I am sold!!

Halloween Safety Tips

Keeping Your Kids Safe on Halloween from FedEx and Safe Kids USA

Since many of you are going to have kids out trick or treating this week I wanted to pass on some safety tips. FedEx is teaming up with Safe Kids USA and child pedestrian safety expert Moira Donahue, to help keep your kids safe. Night time, excited kids running from house to house thinking only of the candy they are going to get at the next house and costumes….it is one of the most dangerous times for little trick or treaters. Please keep the following tips passed on from Safe Kids USA in mind:

* Always trick-or-treat with an adult until age 10.
* Only trick-or-treat in familiar areas that are well lit
* Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
* Look left, right and left again when crossing; always walk, don’t run, when crossing streets
* Make eye contact with drivers and watch for cars that are turning or backing up
* Walk on sidewalks or paths; if there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible
* Never dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars
* Wear light-colored, flame-retardant, costumes decorated with retro-reflective tape or stickers
* Wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes to prevent trips and falls
* Carry a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility to drivers
* Wear face paint and makeup; a mask can restrict a child’s vision

Driving Safely on Halloween
FedEx reminds motorist to please be extra careful this Halloween and recommends that drivers:

* Be especially alert in residential neighborhoods
* Drive more slowly and anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic on and near the road
* Be sure to drive with your full headlights on so you can spot children from greater distances
* Take extra time to actively look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs
* Remember that costumes can limit children’s visibility and they may not be able to see your vehicle
* Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully
* Remember that children are excited on this night and may move in unpredictable ways
* Remember that popular trick-or-treating hours are during the typical rush-hour period, between 5:30-9:30pm
* Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and pedestrians

The above picture has some violations in it! This picture was taken of my kids at Boo at the Zoo.  When they were walking…their masks (except for the red Ninja Turtle) came up so they could see. (honest! LOL)

Card Cubby

I love the Card Cubby!! I have been using it close to a year now and think….wow, this is another product that I wish I thought of. (same with the pouchee..wish I came up with that one!)
I use mine for all my “cards”: discount cards, gift cards, library cards, insurance cards and special coupons..either free things or like 20% off Kohls card. I do not use it for all my coupons.
I also have one for business cards. So when I go to conferences I pull the other one out of my purse and throw in my business Card Cubby.
Pair this with the pouchee and you have one very organized purse.
I actually had 2 girls come up to me at the Type A Mom Conference and ask to see in my purse. They wanted to see if I really was organized. I was a little nervous wondering if I was going to pass the test (I am certainly not perfect and I can be known to throw something in my purse in a hurry when stressed!) But I did pass their test..{phew}. It basically looked just like this, except I have the brown croc card cubby now and my fall purse is that cool yellow gold color.

Genesis of a Great Idea $10,000 Contest

The launch of this Social Media Contest happened at Blog World Expo 2009 on Friday October 16th. Dr. Lindsey Duncan, John Andrews of Collective Bias and Katja Presnal of Skimbaco took the stage to explain the contest and talk about Genesis Today.

This is a fantastic contest because it is anonymous. The panel who is judging will not have any information on the person who has submitted the idea. So this is not a “popular blogger” contest. How refreshing.

Space Saver Bags

pre bagThis is a follow up post to the I did just a few days ago pre-conference.  I told you I was scared to use these bags before I went because I was concerned about wrinkles. So I decided to test it on my way home.  So here is a picture of my jacket (the sleeves are crunched per design…not already wrinkled)

2 jacketsI put two jackets into the large Space Saver bag this time instead of three and it rolled much better.  You roll it to get all the air out of it.

I would not have been able to wear this.  Here is my shirt that I also packed to come home to see how it would do.  I put this in with 2 other thin shirts into the small bag.

Not me.  So here are my thoughts on these bags.  I think they might be worth the purchase if you want to use them to compress your dirty laundry on the way home.  If there were items that wrinkling was not a factor or you do not mind steaming clothes once you get there….then they might be worth it to use on the way there.  Otherwise….I can not recommend these to use with your clean clothes going on a trip.

Space-Saver Bags Review


I saw these space saving bags that are meant for travel. I have used the others and like them…these do not have to be sucked out by a vacuum. You seal your clothes in and then just roll. The air comes out a valve on the other end.

I am traveling to Blog World Exp and will be there for 5 days. Trying to fit everything into one suitcase can be a challenge.  With the cost involved with just your suitcases….you want to only take one of them.  It is $20 for the first bag and $30 for a 2nd bag..that would be $100 just in luggage round trip. That is crazy!!

So here is what I think.  I think these could be a big benefit.  My main concern was if the clothes were going to be wrinkled much worse than they would be from normal packing.  Looking down into the finished sucked up bags….all I could see were these wrinkled looking clothes. It was hard for me to believe that they wouldn’t come out that way. Not that I didn’t want to give a full testing for all of you….but I didn’t want to have completely wrinkled clothes. Maybe…..they don’t wrinkle…but I didn’t want to be walking around BWE in terrible looking clothes and have to say…ooops….

So I didn’t use them other than on my jeans.  Those did not roll very well either.  I did pack the empty bags in my suitcase because I think they will be awesome to put my dirty clothes in to come home.

The gold sweater already had some wrinkles after just 5 minutes in the bag.  The other issue I had was that I roll as many of my clothes as I can to fit down in the sides…with these I couldn’t roll as much.

But I do think these could be of good use in several cases.  So I am not giving these a bad review…but I think you have to just be careful with what you use them with.

Five Steps for Organizing

Organizing Made Simple

Organizing a basement, room or home can be completely overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you do with everything? How much will it cost?

So often we don’t do anything because we don’t know how to do it, or it seems too “big” to do anything at all.
But to do nothing accomplishes nothing.

Step 1: Pick your target zone.
Decide what area you want to work on first. Do not say, “My whole house”. More like, “I want to work on the desk in the corner of the family room.” The hard part when you get sorting is to stick to that target zone. You can’t take something to put away into another room, because then you will see something in that room that you want to move and you will lose focus.

Step 2: Set an appointment on your calendar to start your project.
Try to give yourself at least 2 hours to start your project. Hopefully if you haven’t started too big you can finish. Take “before” pictures. When you finish and take your “after” pictures, it will help to keep you motivated to not let it get back the way it was before.

Step 3: Have your supplies ready to start.
Do not go out and buy a bunch of organizational products. You do not know what you are going to need yet. You may have it somewhere in your home. I suggest getting:
1) Black trash bags for trash
2) White trash bags for donate (so you don’t throw away your donate bags by accident)
3) Clear bins with lids or boxes
4) Labels – masking tape can do the job and a sharpie marker
5) Your sorting lists

Step 4: Make Sorting List
Get a piece of paper and a marker and write this on each one:
1) KEEP – Love it, wear it, use it, can’t live without it.
2) DONATE – Do not like it or use it, doesn’t fit, it is still in good shape and someone can use it.
3) MOVE – It doesn’t belong in this room.
4) STORE – Seasonal items, occasional use (camping, skiing equip. etc)
5) TOSS – Trash, torn, broken, missing pieces, not in any shape for anyone else.

Step 5: Start Sorting
You need to make a decision on each item in the space you are organizing. You have to make fast decisions. give yourself about 5-10 seconds for each item. Do not sit and recall memories for each thing, or start looking at old pictures. When you do that you are “personalizing” that item. The goal here is to “depersonalize” these things in order to get rid of them.

Once you get started, it will get easier and the feeling you get when you are finished with your first project will spur you on to do more.

Shabby Apple Dress Review

I Love This Dress!

I was given this Shabby Apple Dress to wear from Shabby Apple and I was thrilled.  I wore it when I went out to dinner at the Type A Mom conference.  I asked them if they had any long dresses (because my legs would not look cute in a short dress….believe me please) because there is no way I should be wearing one of their cutest ever short dresses (and  they are cute as can be!)  Ladies if you can wear short little sassy dresses…this is one online store you really do need to check out.

This dress is called Cleopatra.  I was very surprised when it came to my door in a padded envelop. I am like…what?  There is NO way that I can fit into a dress that fits into a padded envelop! But guess what…I did! This is a cotton fabric and was perfect for traveling. It folds up small and looked great once I got there.

My other concern was if it was going to be long enough for me.  I am 5’10” tall and so many things aren’t.  They told me it would be.  They also told me that it ran a little big. I got a size medium and guess what it was long enough. I had on flats though. I could not have worn any heels.  But if you are shorter and want to wear some great heels….this would work perfect.


It also had kind of a “wispy” feel to the top of it. It is hard to tell in this picture.  But you can see it better when you see the dress on their site. You can see it here.

So this dress was great. It was comfortable and I plan to wear it again when I go to Blog World Expo 09 next week in Las Vegas. Did you notice the cool bracelet?  It is from Stella and Dot jewelry. I just love it and want to share so neat jewelry with you.

Rainy Day Organizing

What better day to do some organizing than a rainy day?  It is pouring rain today and I look around my house and think….perfect day to organize this office a little more.  Most of my organizing is just maintenance. I have the organizational system in place….but it has to be maintained.

Keeping up on all of it can be daunting. But if you have a place for everything…or most things, then clean up is much easier and less stressful.  If you do not have a system, then when you come to that extra door stopper in the junk drawer or the extra phone extension cord…you have NO idea where to put them?  So what happens?  Nothing. And the problem grows.

Look around today (even though it may not be rainy where you live today) and pick one thing to accomplish that will make you feel better once it is done.

It may be a junk drawer, it may be the front entry way with a zillion shoes all over, it may be the kitchen desk.  But take some time today (even if it is just 1/2 hour) and start. It will feel good!

Tips to Save Time in the Kitchen

Tips To Prepare Meals Quicker & Easier

I have to admit that I am no diva in the kitchen.  In fact, I really don’t care for cooking.  I have to do it…so I do. If someone told me that I could have a free full time cook …I would jump on that one!

I live for fast and easy ways to make meals.  Since I do not like to cook, I want to get in and out of there fast…not spend all day preparing a meal that is gobbled up in 10 minutes and then I have as much time cleaning the kitchen afterwards. (I know….very poor attitude).  I admire those woman that do cook like that and believe me I wish I was one of them…..but alas, I would much rather spend my time organizing my office than making a meal. (yes…kind of sick isn’t it? )

So to that I say…here are a few tips that I have learned over the years that can make throwing a meal on the table an easier chore.

1) Pre-chop onion and peppers. Do several while you have them out and while you are crying over your onions anyway. Then divide them into 1/2 cup portion sizes and put into small freezer bags. I store those little freezer bags inside one larger one for the onions especially (to help reduce any smell). Then when you go to make a casserole or such you can just grab a baggie out of your freezer and you do not have to take the time (and smell and tears) to chop your onions.

2) When making a meal….double it if it is something that can be frozen.  Make a huge batch of chili at the beginning of the fall.  Then freeze it in individual servings if you want or dinner size portions.

3) Freeze food in freezer bags to save room. Years ago I did the Make 30 meals for the month in one day deal.  The way they suggested storing your food was in freezer bags. You can cool it down a little bit and then put it in a freezer bag (chili, tomato sauces etc…work) and lay them flat to freeze. You can get oodles in your freezer.

4) Think about your dinner that morning. Grab any frozen meat from the freezer and have it thawing during the day so that when dinner comes you don’t have to use the microwave to thaw your meat. (that still takes time)

5) Use your crock pots. I love mine.  Throw everything in first thing in the morning.  Dinner is ready in the evening and your whole house smells good all day long.

Deluxe Cosmetic Organizer Review

Ok ladies…this is cool! This is an “A-lister” cosmetic organizer by Lori Greiner. For those of you with oodles of makeup….you need one of these. You will have a great time organizing all your make-up.
It gives you the feel of one of those really nice jewelry boxes (which they also have). It is a heavy and the outside is made of wood. The inside is lined with a washable vinyl.
As you can see there there is a top lid that opens up and has a mirror on it.
I don’t have a whole lot of make up myself….so I used the right hand side for some of my basic everyday jewelry.
On each side there are 2 swing out compartments. The left has top sections for smaller items along the top. There are slots for 72 lipsticks or mascaras etc.
011 This grid is removable also if you don’t like them. (I love them)
This second tray down has dividers that are meant to put your compacts in. My compact was too tall for this to work, but many of the wouldn’t be. Be creative in what you can use this for.
Like I said I do not have a lot of make up, so I put some of my jewelry on this side…that works for me. But you can put anything in these compartments that you need to…bottle of concealer, face creams etc.
The center bottom sections are open for what ever you need to put in them. I used the one for my compact. If you look on the back wall there are also slots that you can put taller things.
I have been very pleased with this organizer….you can use your imagination in how and where you want to put your cosmetics.  This cosmetic organizer was given to me without charge to review for my readers.  (See disclosure)

Working with Genesis Today – So how does that Help in Organizing?

I have to share some news that I am really excited about!!  I am going to be working with Genesis Today. They have signed on with Collective Bias, whom I am a member of.   Genesis Today has a line of Super Fruit Juices. When John from Collective Bias first asked me about working with Genesis Today I told him I wanted to check it out first. My first impression was not a good one.  I think I was on the wrong site.  They did have the juice on this site, but was completely different than it is now. My first thought was…it seemed like a multi level marketing site.  I told John that too.  I also told him that it did not seem like it would be a fit for my blog as I have an Organizing blog. So how does juice work with organizing?  It certainly didn’t seem to be a fit to me at first. I did research it (because I knew nothing about it)  and found only positive things.  I actually got on the correct site and that made me feel better right away.  I was feeling like it was something that I wanted to try for myself even if I didn’t work with them as a blogger.

Then yesterday it all seemed to fall into place.  I remembered my sister and brother in law (he is a oral & Maxillofacial surgeon in DC) had told me about some kind of “super juice” they had been taking for several years. I called her and asked her about what juice they used.  She said it is made by Genesis Today and you can only get it at Health Food stores or online. They use one called Acai 100. They only use 1 oz per day (it is not sold at Walmart…at least not yet)  Not knowing why I was asking her about it, she went on to tell me that since they had been using it her husband had not been sick even once. (That was 3 years). She said she completely believes in it.  My sister and brother in law also research everything like that, so for health purposes I felt completely safe for the fact that they used it. (I know that sounds kind of dumb…but if you knew my brother in law like I do….you would understand). I know it helps with healthy living, and I am still researching it on anti-aging properties, but my sister loves to ask people when they see the two of us together who they think the older sister is. She is almost 4 years older than I am, but weighs less (we are the same height), has less wrinkles and yes…looks younger (happy sis? LOL) Ok…so now I am totally getting psyched.  I know I want to try it myself…but now I am does this fit with my Organizing blog?  Well…I can say that you need to be healthy and have energy in order to organize, but that sounds like a “line” (although it is the true).  Truth is…I am a mom, wife, woman…(aging woman..soon to be 50 …aghhhh!!). I am also a nurse. I have several of the issues going on that this super juice is supposed to help. I am going to be coming to you not so much as an Organizer, but as a woman, mom, wife  and nurse.  I would not be working with this brand if I didn’t feel it would be something worth while for my readers and myself. I will be keeping you filled in on all I am going to learn about it. I will be getting to meet Dr. Lindsey Duncan when I go to Blog World Expo next week. Storage Ottoman

I saw this padded Ottoman at Target  several months ago. I found it on sale and bought it. (This is not a sponsored review) I have been really pleased with it and wanted to share it with you.

Calendars – Do They Control Our Lives OR Help Us Stay In Control of our Lives?

I have to admit that I have felt a bit lost since my computer crashed and I lost my Palm Pilot calendar. I did however, (thank goodness) print out my calendar and update my palm pilot before I took my computer into the computer hospital. They supposedly saved all my info, but my palm info seems to be gone.  The connector cord from my palm to my computer has bit the dust too. So I have my print out calendars and I do still have the info on my palm..but I can’t sync it with my computer any longer.

I have been trying to figure out another system that I can have my calendar and contacts on my computer but sync to my new blackberry.  I am trying google but haven’t synced yet…and don’t really like the calendar.  I don’t want to spend money for one…or very little money if its something great.  My husband keeps telling me Outlook, but I look at it and it cost several hundred dollars.

I think my calendar does control my life! It has everything on it.  Because I tend to live by schedules and routines….when those are thrown into chaos I feel like my life is in a bit of chaos. Is that right? Probably not. Should I be flexible and free? Maybe…but then I will miss appointments, not have phone numbers when I need them and with my personality I would only be crabby, not free.

Does your calendar control you? Do you live by it?  What system do you use and do you have any good suggestions for me on a calendar with contacts that can sync from my computer to my blackberry?

Ocean Isle Inn in North Carolina

Dave and I had the opportunity to visit the Ocean Isle Inn and had a really nice time. It was off season and just a bit cooler which was actually perfect for us. Dave isn’t a big fan of large crowds or high temps, so he was thrilled.

The Ocean Isle Inn  was a nice, moderately priced hotel that was very clean and comfortable. It wasn’t luxurious, but you also aren’t paying luxurious prices to stay there either.  We had an awesome balcony that over looked the ocean that I loved!

We had a full breakfast bar each morning in the hotel.  We had fun using the waffle maker! yum!  It is a really nice to not have to go out some place for breakfast and know that it doesn’t cost you anything extra.

There was a nice in door swimming pool also.

The outdoor pool was really nice also.  It was so nice to sit outside by the pool with my computer and look at and hear the ocean. oh…. wonderful!

Dave did some fishing off the pier that is within walking distance.

Since it was off season there were many places that were closed. I would have loved to have walked to the ice cream shop in town and gone to a few of the restaurants that were close by. But there were still plenty of places to eat, things to see and places to shop.

We had a couple absolutely wonderful days staying at Ocean Isle Inn and exploring Ocean Isle.
