The New Year – The New You

New Years 2007 008

I love the New Year!!  It gives you a new beginning.  A new place to start….a fresh slate.  The encouragement of new goals.

I don’t say resolutions ….I say goals.  Yes I believe you should make goals!   Why not try and make improvements in areas you want to make better.

Sit down tomorrow and reflect. Reflect what last year was and what you want 2010 to be.  Make a list of the goals you want to accomplish. Then next year you can see what you have accomplished during the year….or what you still need to work on.

I am going to be recording my journey for both weight loss and a healthier “me” as I go into my 50th year.  You can follow along on my Chat with Sandy blog starting on the 2nd of January.

Christmas Clean Up & Decluttering

Decluttering Your Christmas decorations

Decluttering Your Christmas decorations

Christmas Clean Up & Declutting

Our decorations came down today. I don’t like keeping them up after Christmas long at all. It just makes me feel “cluttered”.
I LOVE them up before Christmas, but afterwards it just makes me think of all I have to do to get my house back together..and I am anxious to get things back to normal. When you pull out your Christmas bins to replace your decorations after the holidays….think about how many you didn’t use this year.

I know that each of the 4 bins that we brought up from the basement still had things in them that we didn’t put out. In the Christmas ornaments bins, there are ornaments that I usually don’t put up because they don’t really have any special memories and I don’t really care for them. So know what I did this year? I pitched them. I probably should have donated them, but some had some chips in them or just didn’t make me feel real good about donating….plus the fact that I was in “get rid of” mode.
I opened up those bins and there were items that we didn’t put out….I cleaned those out too.
It freed up some room and just made me feel good.

My advice for Christmas (or any holiday decorations) is:
1) If you haven’t used a decoration in the last 2 years….get rid of it. Pass it one to other family members, donate it or pitch it.
2) If you just don’t like a decoration and there are no special memories attached to it….get rid of it.
3) If it is broken or you can’t use it….get rid of it.

It feels good to have it done.

Five Steps to Help Organize Your Christmas Morning

Do You Have Christmas Morning Craziness Going On At Your House?

Paper Paper everywhere!

Paper Paper everywhere!

Paper everywhere….boxes with pieces and parts laying half opened…dog’s wearing bows that got stuck to their fur? Sound like a typical Christmas morning at your house?
So how many Christmas days have you NOT had to try and find something in the trash that probably got thrown out?
Either that card with money from Aunt Ethel or the back of the new toy that Jimmy got. You KNOW it here somewhere but, now it is gone.

There are a few things that might help you cut down on some of the craziness Christmas morning.

1) Get several black trash bags. Station them around the room so that everyone has access to one for their trash. Immediately after opening their gift, have them throw just the paper away.

2) Have one place each person places their opened gifts near them.

3) If you know that your family members are getting gift cards or cash, then have a large colored envelop that they can place their gift cards or money in that has their name on it. You can pass those out after they receive their first one.

4) Have one central bag if you keep the ribbons and bows to recycle. The kids can have fun tossing the bows your way.

5) You can also use white trash bags and have them out in case someone wants to open a new toy that has many pieces and parts. They can put the extra pieces in the bag if the box gets torn apart too much to use. Then make sure that all trash throwing adults KNOW that white trash bags DO NOT go in the trash.

Try these methods and see if your Christmas morning can go a little smoother with clean up being much quicker.

Preparing for Christmas

Christmas “Check Off” List – How does yours look?

We take turns each year putting up the angel

We take turns each year putting up the angel

So how are you doing?  Are you going crazy about now thinking you will never get it all finished in 1 week?

Does your List of To Do’s look more like this?

1) Christmas Cards to send out

2) Buy Christmas Gifts

3) Wrap Christmas Gifts

4) Plan Christmas eve Dinner

5) Plan Christmas Day meals

6) Make Christmas Cookies

7) Think about planning my events

Or does it look more like this?
1) Christmas Cards to send out

2) Buy Christmas Gifts

3) Wrap Christmas Gifts

4) Plan Christmas eve Dinner

5) Plan Christmas Day Meals

6) Make Christmas cookies

If your list is the first one…then you more than likely are “freaking out” right now, aren’t you?  How will I get it done? I should never go to sleep this week because I am going to be out shopping all week, etc.

You need to get your calendar and SCHEDULE when you are going to do each thing. Seriously.  Write it in!  It will help to calm you down so that you will realize there IS time to get it all done.  OR it will help you to realize with what you are hoping to get accomplished won’t happen because it is unrealistic for your situation.  But either way it will help put things into perspective for you.

Would you like to see my list?

1) Christmas cards sent out (But just yesterday)

2) Christmas shopping done (But I have stocking stuffers, my husband likes to help w/ those..that is tonight)

3) Wrap Christmas gifts  - Sunday and Monday

4) Plan Christmas Eve Dinner

5) Plan Christmas Day Meals

6) Make Christmas Cookies – Scheduled for tomorrow.

See? I don’t have everything done.  But I do know how and when I am going to complete each thing…so I can relax and enjoy the festivities.

How are you doing?

Labeling your Holiday Storage Bins

My Snowmen Display
I worked with a client the other day who gave me some insight. She has MS and has trouble getting around. She also has oodles of Christmas decorations. I looked around at all her beautiful displays and asked if she had decorated herself (because I had a hard time picturing this much of a creativity side of her husband…no offense. LOL) She said, “No…I just direct.” I thought how frustrating that must be. To have the desire to do so many things in life and have a disability or disease that doesn’t let your body do what your mind wants to.
Then she shared with me something I have seen before, but never thought to be used in this way. She took a picture of her decorations up and displayed the way she likes them (last year or the year before I think) and posted that picture on the bin with those supplies in it. Brilliant!
Each person helping her just brings that bin up and knows exactly where and how to put the decorations.
So simple but most of us would never have thought to do so.
This is a fantastic idea for any of us to use. In the spirit of Christmas or other holiday, if you know someone who has troubles getting around themselves, help them do it this year! Take a picture close up and one a little further back (to see exactly the location) of their decorations. Help them to load just that set up or two in a bin and post the picture on the outside.
Love it! Thanks Becky!

BedZak Bed Pockets Review

I am very happy with this product. I had been using another bedside organizer that I bought and it didn’t work at all.

(I had a whrrl story on here for the review – but for some reason it has gone hay wire). I did want to put a picture up so you could see the bedpockets.

This product is awesome. He has a sturdy metal frame that goes under your mattress. Then it is adjustable so that it doesn’t matter how tall of a mattress you have, this can adjust right where you need it. Your comforter can cover it all up so that nothing shows when your bed is made. Perfect!
There are pockets for basically anything you need at the bedside…and also a loop on the side if you would want a water bottle or such at your bedside.

The fabric is sturdy and durable. Over all this product is made extremely well. I have been using it since I did this review and can highly recommend it.

They are $29.95 with free shipping (holiday season).

To Win:

Go to BedZak and tell me what the 3 color options are.  Come back here and leave me a comment.

Christmas decorations

Unpacking the Christmas Decorations – Is it Scary?

Christmas decorations disorganized!

Christmas decorations disorganized!

Does your decorations look anything like this?  So many things, just a mess!   It makes you think …..”It is just too much to get out and put away, I don’t really need to decorate.”  Those are the years that you may either have too much clutter, too many commitments going on or you know what a mess it was last year when you put it away and you don’t want to open that box!

Just like you can have too much clutter in the rest of your house – you have have clutter in your decoration supplies too.

Think about it:
Do all your lights work?
Do you use everything that is packed up?
Are there things each year that you don’t really want to put up anymore?
Do you have broken or ragged looking ornaments or decorations that you just can’t throw out?

The solution is simple (but not so easy) You need to sort through and declutter your holiday decorations.
Follow the same steps for any sorting. As you unpack your supplies evaluate (quickly) each item.

1) Keep – You love it, you use and decorate with it, it works and is not broken
2) Donate - It works and looks good, you just don’t like it, or can’t use it now.
3) Pitch – It’s broken or not fit to donate. (recycle if possible)

Remember, if there is something you haven’t used or can’t use….why keep it in a box all the time?  That isn’t honoring the memory. You can take a picture of it to have, then give that space it takes up to one of your other decorations.
