Back Up Your Computer!!

Do you do it?  If your computer crashed or stopped working, would everything on it be saved?

Is it one of those things that you have on your “forever do list”?  It is something you “intend” to do, but just haven’t gotten around to it?

Then do it!!

I have a good friend who just had her computer zapped in an electric storm, someone else who lost her computer on a trip.  Everything was gone.  No back ups!
Imagine losing all your pictures, all your paperwork you have saved. Everything!

I don’t back my computer up everyday. I should… I know. It is as simple as plugging it in when I go to bed and hitting a button.

But I do always back it up before I leave on a trip or take it into the Apple Store.  Thank goodness I did that last week.  I backed it up and went into the Apple Store.  I needed a new hard drive. When I got it back the next day it was back to square one, none of my data was on it.  But I plugged in my external hard drive and reloaded everything that had previously been on there.  (phew)

I am looking to get some of my pictures off of my computer. I hate to do it, because I am constantly going to them looking for one for a post, or that someone wants a copy of – but I have over 100g of memory being used on my pictures.

It will also be good if I do back my pictures up to an internet site. Then if I am on another computer, I can still access my pictures.

    I finally just signed up for an offsite backup service (Carbonite). It automatically backs up my data anytime I make a change or add something new. It is offsite, so if there were a fire (God forbid!), everything would be saved. It has saved me countless nights of worrying!

  3. This is very strange. I was getting ready to leave a message telling you about Carbonite and I read the previous post and it looked like I had already commented. Any way, my name is Robin also and I also just recently started using Carbonite. My whole life exists on my computer and the thought of losing it scares me to death. I now have confidence that all my patterns and other stuff is safe and sound. BTW it backs up your photos and I believe you can access it from anywhere although I haven’t tried it.

    LOL… the “Robins” like Carbonite! I’m going to look into it also. I hate not having all my photos on my computer, but I have a feeling that is part of what is slowing it down. I want to be able to access them and work with them easily though if i need to.

    Hey Sandy and another Robin,
    Carbonite is $59 per year. You can get a discount for paying for multi-years upfront. You do have access from any computer, however, it is for backup and not storage. If you delete a folder from your hard drive, they will wait 30 days and delete it also. Basically you are keeping an exact replica of what is on your computer at all times. If you need storage, you may be able to get that from another company along with offsite backup. I went with Carbonite because it came highly recommended from the tech columnist for our local paper.

  6. Sandy, I just started the process of moving files, including photos, to my google doc’s account. I had started to use SafeSync from trend micro because I’d been given a free trial for 1 year, but I quickly ran out of room.

    So, I went to my google doc’s account and found that they allow photos and videos now! So I started moving stuff and haven’t run out of room yet.

    Really? Google docs does? I’ll have to look. Wouldn’t that be picasa? When I go to Google photos ..that is where it goes. I do have an account there, but it seems that to get my pictures back to work with, I’ll have to add them to downloads… I don’t know, just seems like a pain to grab them to work with them.

  8. Nope. not picasa, though I like that service too.

    When I go to my google docs, there is a tab at the top of the page that says “images and videos” . It’s between the “documents” and “more” options.

    When I click on a photo that I’ve uploaded there, it gives me a new page within docs where the photo is hosted, just like one of the presentation or written documents would be.

    There is an option to share the file too, which means you can share the link for others to view directly. It looks like this would also work if you want to link directly to the photo within a blog post.

    It didn’t used to be an option in Docs, at least I don’t remember it before about 6 months ago.
