Organizing for Christmas

Starting Early is the Key

decorating christmas tree

There is a lot to do the month of December, so much that most of us can get really over whelmed.  Here is a list of things that I need to do.

Step One – Make Your List

1) Take Family Christmas picture
2) Order Christmas cards
3) Write Christmas letter
4) Send out cards
5) Shop for gifts
6) Decorate the house
7) Decorate the tree & inside
8) Wrap gifts
9) Schedule Christmas parties & events
10) Plan for family over night
11) Plan Christmas eve dinner & Christmas morning breakfast
12) Plan for five December kid’s birthdays
13) Travel to Bentonville for work

Step Two: Schedule each event

Use your calendar or paper and write down your timeline of when you plan to complete your project.

Step Three: Follow your list

Key – Start early.

We took our family Christmas picture at Thanksgiving when as many of my family members as were able, were home.

I just ordered our Christmas picture and they will come next week.

Shopping – I used to have my shopping completed really early, but not the last few years.   I just started my shopping this weekend. I didn’t go out for Black Friday shopping (another tradition that I didn’t do this year) but I did go out this weekend.  I still have a lot to do, but will try to have most of it completed by next weekend.

Wrapping – I normally don’t wrap as soon as I get the gifts. There are times I end up wanting to return something because I find it at a much better price or find something I like better. But I do wrap once I have my shopping completed.

We don’t have a Christmas party here, but we usually are invited to a few, so we have to be sure to get them on the calendar. Since we have all five of our kids birthday’s that still live at home, in December – there is more planning in respects to that.

The real key to having things go smoothly is planning
Don’t  wait until the last minute and don’t be scared to ask your family for help.

Nutrisystem – Week 6

Weighing in the Day After Thanksgiving Should Be Outlawed!

It sure wasn’t fun to have to weigh in today for Nutrisystem.   I did get my weight yesterday and then again today to show you (if there was a big difference.)

I got yelled at by my family for taking a picture of my plate and I was told to fill it up more.  I had more than enough to eat and I didnt’ finish eating all my dressing. I should have taken white meat (I know) but I LOVE the dark meat. I had a taste of the yams, a very small helping of the green bean casserole and 1 crescent roll  (without butter)

thanksgiving

Now for my weigh in.

I weighted 191.0 today.  Last week I was: 193.5   I lost 2.5 pounds this week.

Yesterday I weighted 190.5, so I only gained 1/2 pound yesterday on Thanksgiving.   I mentioned the meal, but I also ate some desserts.  I had a very tiny slice of peanut butter pie, and another tiny slice of pumpkin (with whipped cream).  We ate around 1:30 pm.  We went over to my Dad’s house around 6pm. Of course the food from their afternoon meal came out for “left over” dinner.  I only had a small piece of chocolate cake. (I know!… that isn’t what I should have eaten.)

When we got home around 9pm I was really hungry, to the point I felt nauseated.  I didn’t want a whole meal from Nutrisystem, instead I opened a can of light chicken noodle soup and had that to calm my stomach.

The week prior had been a good one.  I wasn’t good about taking pictures of the food this week from Nutrisystem, but I’ll give you a surprise “good” pick and one that wasn’t very good.

I had the pancake mix this week.  I had thought that tiny package was only going to make about 2 quarter size pancakes by the look of it.  But it actually made me two very nice size pancakes. I didn’t feel like I was being “cheated” at all. I’m sorry I didn’t order some more of that this month (but will next month).

The item that I didn’t like at all and couldn’t even eat was the package (pantry version) of chicken salad.  It was in a packet and I had to squeeze it out (which kind of grossed me out). But the consistency was pasty and I scrapped it off my plate and didn’t eat it at all.

So the week went much better than I expected with Thanksgiving.  One holiday down, now the whole month of Christmas celebration torture is about to begin.

Thanksgiving – What are You Thankful For?

I think so often we don’t really know how thankful we are for some things, until they are gone.  Loved ones in our lives, the health of our families and ourselves etc. Don’t you think?

I don’t know that it is because we are selfish, I think it is because we don’t really know what life will be without those things, people or health.

But those people who have gone through loss, serious loss of family, health, job or more have a better idea. They have lived it.   Have I? To an extent I have, but not like some.  I had the loss of my first marriage.  I didn’t want anything to do with a divorce and I was a mess for several years.  I can look back on it now and be thankful it happened. I have found a man that I have a better relationship with than I ever did my first husband.

I have lost my mother after an almost seven year battle with cancer.  But it was gradual and I had time to grieve along the way, time to prepare for what was to happen.  But I have my father, and today is actually his 81st birthday. He told me he doesn’t want to celebrate being 81.  I said, “But Dad, you should then celebrate that you are still alive to have another birthday! lol” He laughed so hard at that one.

Thank goodness I’ve not had to go through a sudden death or tragedy with my family. My family is healthy and happy.  We don’t have oodles of money, but we blessed to have what we have.

I know that I take things for granite, and I try to appreciate what I have and how wonderful it is.

Thanksgiving is a great time to reflect on those things, be thankful for them and know how truly blessed we are.

Nutrisystem Week 5

Getting Back in the Groove

I’ve been home from my travels for 5 days now. I’ve gotten myself back into the routine I needed to…. well, not completely. I haven’t started my walking/running yet.  Planning on that for next week… honest! (I know.. that’s what they all say right?)

Ok.. here is the dealio -

Starting weight 200.5
Week 1 – 197
Week 2 – 193
Trip 1 – 4 day weekend
Week 3 -194.5
Trip 2 – 4 day weekend
Trip 3 (back to back) 5 day trip
Week 4 -when I got home
this last Monday am – 201.5!
Wow!! Gained it all back plus some. I know I had a lot of water weight on me. When I was in CO because of the altitude problems I didn’t take my diuretic at all. In AR I took it twice of the 5 days. That weight was just  5 mornings ago.  I have been back on my Nutrisystem and drinking water & taking my diuretic.

This morning I was 193.5!! I’m excited!  Sad that it is still up from 3 weeks ago, but glad that I was able to get it back down into reasonable range so fast after my trip.

I’m going to share some of the things I like to eat in the morning… muffins!

This is the chocolate muffin – love it! Doesn’t that look great? Only problem? It’s too small!  Not really, but I was used to being able to get those huge big muffins at the store. You know which ones I mean.  This one is much smaller than that.

nutrisystem chocolate muffin

You can see the size of it. Once you have cut down your intake, it really is enough.  This is what I had for breakfast the other morning. A banana, light fat free yogurt and the muffin. I also had 8 oz of skim milk and my coffee.  I was completely satisfied.  I could tell you that I actually felt too full (which was true) but you probably wouldn’t believe me.

nutrisystem

This morning I had a banana nut muffin.  Because I felt too full yesterday with the banana and yogurt, I just had the muffin this morning, with my coffee.  It was enough too.

This muffin isn’t quite as moist as the chocolate muffin, but I still enjoyed it and it was still good.  It is the same size as the choc. one though.

nutrisystem

For dinner the other night I had the mushroom risotto. I love risotto so was really excited about it.  The flavor was pretty good and the texture was thick and rich – but for me it was a little too spicy.  I ate the fat free cottage cheese with it to cut the spice. (remember.. for most people who aren’t spicy wimps it is probably fine). But combining the two of these together I got too full and couldn’t eat all of it.

Tonight for dinner I had the thick crust cheese pizza.  I forgot to get a picture of it before it was gone (sorry).  The crust is separate and you put the sauce and cheese on yourself. This way they can have it as a pantry food, and not frozen food.  I wasn’t super thrilled. The reason – the dough was a little damp on the bottom and very chewy.  I have another one to try and I think I will put it in the oven. I bet then it will be good. The flavor was good, everything else about it was good, but the chewy crust and the moisture – which I’m sure is the microwave part of it.

I’m frustrated this week that the first two weeks that I did so well when down the toilet when I went out of town for the three trips. But I can’t let it defeat me. I got back into this week and go things going again.

Prioritizing

November 16, 2011 by
Filed under Blog, How To Organize, Time Managment

I don’t know about you, but my life has been extremely busy since I took on this full time job. Part of prioritizing so that we don’t go totally crazy is to not take on too much. If you do, then you have to give up something.
For me, one of the things that is on kind of a hold right now is my blog. Ugh… I hate to say that, but there is no reason not to be honest with you all.
If you follow me, then you will realize I’m not posting as frequently as I used to. I’m hoping to get back into the swing of posting more often, but for now, I’m hanging on by a thin string.

I have been turning down most reviews that I have coming through. I’m not planning on having a gift guide this year. So things are changing.

Often people have a hard time prioritizing, so that they take on way too much, don’t want to give up anything (because they either volunteered for it or just love it) and then they fall apart because they can’t do anything the way they should.

How to prioritize:
1) Make a list of all the things you have to do daily.
2) Make a time line of when you plan to do those things on your list
3) Work your list and see if it is realistic.
4) If you can’t get it all completed as you planned, decide what you want to give up.
5) Rework your schedule again. If it still doesn’t work, take off another item.

We have to realize that we aren’t failures if we give something up! It is ok.
I’m not giving my blog up… I’m just not posting as much as I was.

My organizing posts take a lot of time to do. The writing is easy, but I have to actually go in and organize the area (time consuming) then process and edit all the photos and then put together the post. I would guess that one of my organizing posts takes a minimum of 10 hours from start to finish.

Give yourself a break…don’t go crazy – it is ok to give up one of the zillion things you are doing each day, as long as your family, your home are taken care of properly.

Organizing Mission Monday Link Party – Week 47

Tailgating with Collective Bias

I had told you all I was doing a lot of traveling in the last few week. This was the last of my adventures. I went to Bentonville AR to the Collective Bias offices for several days.

We were invited to stay a couple extra days so that we could join in the Tailgating festivities with them!

razorbacks

Kim from @Craftymamaof4 and I got some duds to wear so we would fit in (and not be OSU or Stealers fans for the day).  I will tell you that living in the Columbus Ohio area all my life, I have only been to one OSU football game. That was before I was ever married. I’ve never been to a real tailgate party. What fun!

I was amazed at everything people had. It was a super windy day and many people couldn’t put up their tent things. (What are those called? lol)  But there were plenty of TV’s hooked up!

I had to laugh at myself because I couldn’t for the life of me remember to call this (their mascot) a Razorback.  I wanted to call their mascot a hedgehog!

razorback

We didn’t go to the game, but the stadium was right in front of us. We had a cool view of the ramps going into the stadium.

When Kim and I left to walk back to our car, we were able to get a better view of inside the stadium, although you could only see a little of the field.

I like this picture

Thanks for a fun evening!

Nutrisystem – Week 4

November 11, 2011 by
Filed under Blog, Reviews & Giveaways

Vacations and traveling = Ugh

So obviously I’m still in the mist of my almost two weeks of traveling. Do you think I’m doing well? Nope…. I’m not. It is going to be one of those … get home and be SO mad at myself – kind of things.

Dave and I traveled to Divide, CO and stayed at this awesome cabin with an altitude of 9,000 ft.  That started some of the issues with my eating. I had issues with altitude illness.  Headaches, and some nausea.  You would think the nausea was the kind that you don’t want to eat. Nope, mine was that I needed to eat something to feel better.  But I wanted more crackers, breads and things. Salad just sounded terrible to me.

The other factor for me was that I didn’t take my diuretic (water pill) when I was there.  I have been taking that for a couple months because I retain fluid (especially when I travel).  But because of the altitude I was advised to not take it if I could help it.

I didn’t go hog wild and eat everything, we had grapes to eat, fat free yogurt and cottage cheese in the cabin, but Dave and I split a dessert one night and I ate crackers several times.

I got on the scale on Wednesday morning and was back to 198 pounds.  ugh!!   If I was then staying home I wouldn’t have been as upset… but I left that same Wednesday morning for Arkansas.

I did pack some of my Nutrisystem food, but I haven’t been eating it.  (insert sad face here)   I look at the lunch time bars and I’d like to eat them as a snack in addition to my lunch, while others are snacking on cookies etc.  But I haven’t done that.

I still have turned down lots of good stuff, but certainly not everything. I’m eating a lot I shouldn’t be too.

For breakfast this morning there was a buffet breakfast at the hotel. I had them make me an omelet with veggies only, no cheese.  I ate that and a fat free yogurt for breakfast.  I know… egg white omelet would have been much better.

The rest of the day wasn’t so good.

This is classic travel/vacation #FoodFail for me.

Hoping next week will be more positive. I will get home on Sunday and will hopefully get my butt in gear on the treadmill again!

Organizing Mission Monday Link Party – Week 46

Vacation in Denver Colorado

Dave and I are celebrating our five year anniversary in Colorado. We are in a cabin about 12 miles away from Divide, CO.  It is beautiful! The only issue is that we are both having some problems with the altitude. We are about 9,000 ft. Even though we have been trying to drink a lot of water, we are both having problems with headaches.   I woke up this morning feeling terrible! First morning here.  My head was throbbing. But it did get better after I was up a little bit, ate and drank and took some ibuprofen.

Here are some pictures of our place.  I might not have any more posts up this week. As soon as we get back from our trip on Tuesday I’m off again for business on Wednesday.

This is looking down on the living area. Look at that window to the left….

Here is looking out that window from the 2nd floor of our place.

This is it from the outside.

So we have a cool window… but if we aren’t looking out onto a cool view – what good is it right?  This is our view! That is Pikes Peak out there.

We got there and within ten minutes this is what we see off our deck.

We are staying at a cabin called Pikes Peak. This is not a review, we paid full price for our place. But I wanted to share how wonderful it was. I’m sure I’ll post some more pictures later this week if I get a chance.

Nutrisystem – Week 3

November 4, 2011 by
Filed under Blog, Reviews & Giveaways

Traveling and Maintaining

I think we all know how hard it is to eat well when your away from home.  I am in the middle of several trips.  The first five days were in Virginia visiting my sister and brother in law.  I drove my Dad and brother to visit.

Last week was a good week for me… this week – not as well. I gained 1.5 pounds from last week.  (plus I need a pedicure real bad.. lol) What scares me is the next two weeks is full of travel too…

I took a few lunches, breakfasts and a dinner with me for the trip. It was nice to have meals that I could travel with. I didn’t have to worry about a cooler.

The frustrating thing is that I was SO good! To realize what I would have normally have eaten!  First night we went to a Greek restaurant. My favorite thing ever at a Greek restaurant is spanakopita. Although it has spinach in it, it isn’t low cal!  I got a greek salad with chicken. (no cheese or croutons). I did have one bite of my Dad’s spanakopita though.

Dinner the next night was at a French restaurant.  I got lemon chicken breast. There was a side of fresh veggies with a fried potato cake on top. I took a little bite of the potato cake and gave the rest away (it was good!). I only ate half of my chicken breast, measure the amount by the palm of my hand. My sister and her friend got awesome looking desserts. I didn’t order one, but did have a bite of my sisters and a little bite of her friends.

Our last night was a homemade meal that my sister made. She is a vegetarian and eats healthier than I ever do! She made a whole slew of things! There were two kinds of mushrooms,

mushrooms

mushrooms

onions, peppers,

peppers

butternut squash – no butter, no cream or anything. It tasted a LOT like sweet potato casserole.

butternut squash

salmon,

salmon

steak, and small potatoes.

She didn’t use any butter or anything fattening to cook. She said she calls it “clean” food. A very healthy meal.  It was awesome.

My cousin’s wife brought some Russian desserts… now those are not “clean” or unfatting! lol But  I took a very small 1×2″ piece of each piece. The chocolate I had one bite and didn’t eat the 2nd bite. The other (not sure what it was) I did the same thing. One bite only.  Now the Napoleon… that was a different story. omg was it awesome! I had my little 2 bites, and then I did get a small 2×2 square, but it was only the bottom 1/3 of the piece. It is multi layered dessert.  That was the worse thing I ate the whole time I was there!

Yet when I got home on I weighed myself the next morning. I had gained 2 pounds!! Yuck!  I felt SO disciplined and was so proud of how good I was. So I have worked the rest of the week trying to get back off the 2 pounds.

The big problem is that I leave on Saturday for Denver for 5 days, get home for less than 24 hours and leave again on another trip (business) for another 5 days. I’m hoping I won’t end up back at day one after all this!

Exercise? Ok… I haven’t exercised this week either, and don’t know if I will again before I get back on the 13th.

It is hard to continue to “behave” when your away. There are so many temptations and you feel like, “this is vacation” so you want to give in. I just have to be strong!

Here are a few things that I had from Nutrisystem this week.  This is one of the lunches.

nutrisystem Take off the lid. See the little very light little intended marks? That is the water line. It would be nice if this were marked a little better. It is kind of hard to see and I had a hard time believing this was the line I was looking for when I opened the first one.  Just add water, stir it up and microwave for 45 seconds.

You stir it up good and let it sit for a couple minutes.  It is hot and I really like how they taste. A nice warm lunch. It is actually pretty filling too.

I had this for lunch today.  It was cheese and broccoli potatoes. You didn’t microwave it. You add boiling water and stir.  It was ok. I wasn’t super impressed. Kind of mushy (I know potatoes are mushy) but the favor wasn’t bad.  But I don’t think I’ll be picking it again.

This is one item I WILL be picking again. It is the peppermint cookie. Dessert time at night! Yum!

I will be packing some of my cookies for my trips.

Twitter Tips

Eleven Important Twitter Tips

Twitter is something that some people love and use all the time, or something that people just don’t get.  I didn’t get it at first either. But soon realized the reach and potential it could give me.

Working recently with Ted Rubin for cbSocially I have learned a lot of things that I didn’t know from Ted.  I did know that you need to engage and talk on Twitter and I strive to always be positive.  I do not like to use twitter to grip. There might be a time and a place it is appropriate, I’m not saying that – but I do not like to engage in “fighting” on twitter. Not cool.

Engaging with others is key!
Twitter is a two way street… it isn’t a one way street meant for you to just shout your message out and not pay attention to anyone else is writing. No         one wants someone shouting at them all the time. If you only tweet out YOUR stuff, that is what you are doing.  Talk to them. Respond!

Be Positive!
Be encouraging, inspiring and up beat.  Who wants to hear someone complain all the time?

Use Their Name
Look for the person’s name in their profile. Use it when thanking them. Thanks Sandy for the RT!  It is much more personal.

Keep Your Tweets Shorter than 140!
If your tweets are less than 122 characters, it is easy to RT them. If the other person has to take the time to shorten a tweet, chances are
they won’t take the time to RT the message.

Don’t ever begin your tweet with the @ sign!
If you do, then it doesn’t go into the main stream. It only goes into the stream of the person you are addressing.  Use a word or RT, or if nothing
else use a period before the @ sign. For instance  .@OrganizerSandy

Respond to Every Tweet Directed To You.
Thank them for their RT’s.  Say Your Welcome if they are thanking you for following them. In real life you would respond, if someone
was speaking to you… So respond! (If the tweet is inappropriate I do not respond. If nasty I will unfollow or block that person)

Do Not Use the RT Button on Twitter!
It will not show up in Your stream. Copy & paste if you are on Twitter. This way you get the added benefit of your tweet being seen again by your followers. More traffic, means higher klout scores. On Tweetdeck, HOotsuite or Seesmic make sure it is set “Old Style RT”
You want every tweet to help in your stats.

Using a Hashtag
If you have a group that you follow that uses a # then be sure to use it. We are using the #cbias  for our community. Why? Because it is a way
to easily identify the tweets our community members tweet.  RT’ing each other is simple and builds relationships. Being able to find your
friends tweets is simple and will increase your chances of engagement.

Don’t Over Use Hashtags
When someone sees a tweet with 3 or 4 hashtags in it, it is only a turn off. Limit hashtags to one or two at most.

Follow Back
Follow back those that follow you.  I don’t follow the spammers, porn, foul mouthed or languages I don’t understand ; but I try to follow everyone
else. Your tweet goes into their stream and is seen by their followers.  Why wouldn’t you want to follow back as many people as you could? Plus
if someone is trying to grow their handles (like I’ve been doing with the cbSocially handles) then they will unfollow those who do not follow

I have become really frustrated with DM’s.  I rarely use that feature anymore and don’t even check it often.  It has become just full of spam and auto DM’s.  Auto DM’s are where people have read somewhere that it is a good idea to send out an automatic message to anyone that follows them.  They have also been told.. better yet link up your blog or your FB page because then everyone will follow you there too. In my personal opinion I think that is terrible advice.  I will not click on any link that is DM’d to me unless I actually know and trust the person. There is too much spam.  It has totally taken over my direct message box to the point I don’t use it anymore. Sad.   As for the validation services, they are a pain. I do not take the time to go in and click a link and put in a code in order to follow you.  Really? What are you really validating…. that you are a person and not spammer? To me it is almost another piece of spam. Again… fail in my personal opinion.

If you are starting a new twitter handle, a good way to get conversation going is to thank your followers.  Use their name, make a comment about something on their twitter page or blog link.

The most important thing to remember  is to talk to others on twitter… don’t shout out your one way message. Put your message out there, but respond, be a real person. If no one actually talked to anyone on twitter and only put their “commercial” out there.. would you use it?  Would you watch TV is there were no shows, just commercials? I don’t think so.

I’m @OrganizerSandy on twitter. Would love to have you follow.
