How To Prepare Outdoor Furniture For Winter? Top Tips

0

A harsh winter can ruin even durable metal furniture, let alone plastic or wooden ones. So with the onset of cold weather, no matter what your furniture is made of, it is important to properly prepare it for the winter. How? We’ll tell you below.

Artificial rattan outdoor furniture

Artificial rattan is a unique material that does not require special conditions for winter storage. That is why many people buy garden furniture dubai, because it is durable and is not afraid of any weather conditions.

You can keep such outdoor furniture outside in the snow, rain and cold all winter, and nothing will happen to it! In the spring, simply wash off the stains from the melted snow, brush off the dust and continue to use wicker furniture as if nothing had happened.

However, if you are not a big fan of cleaning, then we advise you to cover synthetic rattan furniture with protective covers for the winter. Then, with the advent of the new summer season, you will have much less cleaning. Also, for the winter, you need to remove the upholstered elements of furniture and store them separately indoors.

Before leaving synthetic rattan outdoor furniture outside, be sure to check what material the frame is made of. If the base of the tables, armchairs and sofas is aluminum, you have nothing to worry about.

This metal doesn’t oxidize or rust under the influence of moisture. But if a wooden frame is braided with rattan, then such furniture should be stored indoors.

Natural rattan outdoor furniture

Natural rattan is an extremely picky material. It doesn’t tolerate excessive moisture and dryness, heat and cold, and cracks from temperature changes. Therefore, storing wicker furniture made from natural materials on the street will not work.

In winter, it is best to use natural rattan furniture inside the house where you permanently live, or to complement your home decor with it. In this case, you can easily control the microclimate of the room and take immediate measures to prevent the outdoor furniture from spoiling.

And remember, in no case should furniture made of rattan and other natural materials be wrapped in polyethylene. It can only be closed with covers made of natural fabric.

Also, at the end of the season, carefully wipe the furniture and treat all cracks and chips on it with a sanding sponge, and then cover this surface with varnish or polish. Otherwise, in winter, chips and cracks will become a tasty place for fungus and mold.

Outdoor furniture made of metal, plastic and wood

Let’s now look at how to organize winter storage of outdoor furniture from other popular materials – plastic, metal and different types of wood:

  • Plastic is one of the most unpretentious materials for storage. Of course, if it is high-quality plastic. In this case, you can safely leave it on the street – it doesn’t fade under the rays of the sun, crack from the cold, rain or snow. However, if you doubt the strength of plastic furniture, you can close it with protective covers or bring it into the room. But even in this case, special storage conditions are not required.
  • Metal. Structures made of aluminum and stainless steel can be safely stored outdoors. Just remember to remove soft pillows or fabric. If your garden furniture is made of iron, carefully check its surface. Find cracks and chips – be sure to cover the furniture with a special varnish so that rust spots don’t appear on it during the winter.
  • Softwoods are beech, spruce and larch. They swell from excessive moisture, so they cannot be stored outside. It is better to leave furniture made of such wood in a closed and well-ventilated area. However, beware of temperature fluctuations and a well-heated room – such outdoor furniture can easily dry out.
  • Hardwoods such as acacia and eucalyptus can theoretically be left outside in the winter. Due to the dense wood, they are practically immune to moisture. At the same time, any wooden furniture can only be covered with covers made of natural fabrics and in no case with polyethylene. However, it is still better to store wooden garden furniture in a closed and unheated room. And remember, before wintering, wooden furniture must be thoroughly cleaned, especially from bugs, fungus and mold, and stored in a well-ventilated area.

Remember, protecting outdoor furniture with painting, varnishing, etc. will not be effective without protective covers. And covering up the furniture doesn’t mean you can leave it untreated for the winter. Use both methods in combination and then your furniture will not suffer even from the most severe winter.
